General

Do AELC offer paid or unpaid internships?

All AELC Internships are unpaid, but the experience you gain will almost certainly pay off long term through your professional life. Many unpaid internships are not time consuming, which allow students to work part-time jobs at the same time.

How long will it take to secure an internship?

Securing a suitable internship can take several months which is why we ask for a minimum lead up time of 12 weeks. (On rare occasions, an internship can longer than 12 weeks to organise.) Read about the internship process here.

Can I use my internship towards my study credits?

Yes. However, it is up to each applicant to ensure the internship they are undertaking meets the requirements of their course to obtain credit. We suggest you consult both your education provider and your AELC Internship Specialist to arrange this.

How do I benefit from my internship?

You will benefit in many ways. We’ve explained a couple here.

Could this internship lead to future employment?

While some companies have been known to hire former interns, this is a very rare occurrence. It is important to understand that your host organisation will probably not offer you employment and will not sponsor any visa applications.

What kind of organisations take on interns?

At AELC we believe that the best kind of host organisation is committed to and enthusiastic about hosting an intern. All sorts of organisations can take on interns, check out some of Australia’s top industries here.

What hours should I expect to work?

You should expect to work 8-9 hours per day with at least one day off per week. The structure of hours (e.g. 9am – 5pm) may vary between companies.

Can I use information sourced from my internship in my future academic projects?

It depends; occasionally your host organisations may be working with sensitive or confidential projects. You must not use any of your internship work for any other purpose, unless prior permission is granted by an organisation and/or your AELC Internship Specialist.

What if I’m not a native English speaker?

You will need sufficient English to be able to perform your duties and work efficiently in the working environment. The required evidence of English language level is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575. AELC advise that interns with limited English complete English Language Studies prior to applying for an internship.

Do you help me find accommodation?

Although AELC does not provide an accommodation service for their interns, Your Internship Specialist is available to discuss your options with you and will link you up with the best contacts.

Will I have a choice of internship?

The host organisations that we approach to host your internship are based on our in-depth discussions with you, your objectives and your professional aspirations. They are also based on AELC’s professional relationships and vast knowledge of the Australian business industry.

What support will I be given?

AELC offer support and guidance with all aspects of the internship experience and we are happy to offer advice and assist our interns with finding the services they need. However, we do not arrange travel, accommodation, insurance, visas, etc.

Parents

Help! My child wants to do an internship in Australia!

Congratulations on raising an independent and motivated child! It’s natural to feel some anxiety about seeing your child off to a faraway country, so we’ve developed some tips to help you prepare.

How safe is Australia?

In general, Australia is a safe country, with one of the lowest serious crime rates in the world. However, like any country it is important to ensure personal safety by taking necessary precautions.

What is the medical system like?

Australia prides itself its high quality medical facilities. However, it is very important that interns take out travel insurance that includes both medical and dental treatment as the cost of these services can be quite high should they be required. If an intern has a health issue they will need to contact their insurance provider prior to seeking medical treatment if possible to ensure that their treatment is covered.

How do I contact my child in an emergency?

We encourage our interns to share their contact details with family and friends. Our Internship Specialists are on hand via email and our 24/7 emergency contact line.
