Retrobuild
RetroBuild is a fabulous new project designed to further the practical skills and knowledge of interns in the area of sustainability, project management, design and construction. It provides community awareness on achievable ‘Do It Yourself’ changes that can be made at home and work for sustainable living and waste management.
Four teams of interns, made up of multiple faculty university and apprentice/trades students, will compete in the planning, design and execution of ‘RetroBuild’ renovations to four separate established projects. They will be using the concepts of sustainability and minimal waste in order to achieve more eco-efficient living and working arrangements.
A committee consisting of industry experts will oversee the project and interns will work closely with highly experienced mentors to develop their skill-set and demonstrate the achievability of sustainable living for the general community.
Interns will need to undertake research on the proposed products for the renovation providing evidence on the sustainability of the materials over the entire product lifecycle. They will address sustainability in all areas of the renovation, including composting, chemicals and paint use, recycling, waste water, waste disposal, furniture, flooring, curtains, electrical goods and water and energy saving devices. Minimal waste is mandatory and interns will be assessed on industry by-products used in the renovation process, and options for use of any leftover materials.
The RetroBuild process will be filmed and Channel 7 have expressed an interest in airing the show.
Supporting material, including fact sheets, will also be published for community education. The houses will be open for public viewing after project completion and will be then be auctioned off.
