Australian Business Culture

The Australian workplace is professional and dynamic, diverse and multicultural, with an emphasis on creating an inclusive atmosphere. Aussies like to work in an environment that is friendly and relaxed, but this is only achieved when everyone plays by the rules.

Most workplaces are laid out in an open plan style, which reflects the Aussie attitude of treating of all staff members as equals regardless of their position. Although hierarchies may not be evident in the workplace; there are still clear lines of authority that must be respected. Australian bosses expect their staff to be committed to their work, take initiative, and respectful.

Informal language, humour, and a social environment are typical of Australian workplaces. Never-the-less, it is important to keep a professional edge to your communication. Be confident, look people in the eye, and shake hands when introduced. As an intern, this means that you should be yourself, but be proactive and show your enthusiasm for the role.
